Schumer Says Americans Oppose Mideast War Amid Rising US Casualties
During remarks delivered on the Senate floor, Schumer reported that 140 U.S. service members have been injured since Feb. 28. Among them, eight sustained serious wounds, while eight others have died while serving.
He also noted that the violence has resulted in significant civilian losses across the Middle East. According to reports, hundreds of people have died in the region, including 170 individuals at an elementary school for girls.
"That initial report suggested may have been the result of US operations," he said, demanding a "full, transparent and independent" investigation of what happened at the school and why so many civilians were killed.
Schumer, a Democrat from New York, argued that the growing number of casualties abroad, combined with heightened tensions overseas and financial pressures in the United States, is causing many Americans to question the rationale behind the conflict.
"Through all this change, all this chaos, higher gas prices, rising casualties, increased hostilities, Americans are asking a very simple question: Why? Why is America at war? Americans certainly don't want war. Americans didn't ask for this," he said.
