Nominate an outstanding high school senior as a 2027 U.S. Presidential Scholar!

Who are the top high school seniors in Iowa? The Iowa Department of Education has officially kicked off the nominating period for the 2027 U.S. Presidential Scholars program and wants to hear from you about the remarkable students in your community. Nominations will be accepted through Nov. 29.

Educators, parents, community members and other partners are invited to submit nominations for students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, career and technical education (CTE) or the arts for the U.S. Presidential Scholars program, one of the highest honors a student can achieve. Nominations for students who exhibit exceptional scholarship and leadership accomplishments but may not receive recognition through other nominating processes, such as SAT and ACT scores, are highly encouraged.

All nominations will be reviewed for excellence in the following areas:

  • Academics
  • School and community involvement
  • Leadership and character
  • Overcoming personal obstacles, heavy workload and family responsibilities

CTE student nominations will also be reviewed for their accomplishments in CTE, such as completion of a work-based learning experience, leadership in a career and technical student organization, earning an industry-recognized credential and evidence of real-world application of skills, among others.

Additionally, nominations for students participating in the arts should include exceptional achievements in dance, media arts, music, theatre or visual arts. Nominations for the arts can include samples or links to a student’s work.

From the nominations, up to 30 Iowa students will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education for further consideration for the program designation. Twenty students, 10 male and 10 female, will be submitted for the general academics category while five students each will be submitted for CTE and the arts categories. Candidates for the 2027 U.S. Presidential Scholars program will receive an invitation to submit additional information to the Commission on Presidential Scholars, a presidential-appointed group charged with selecting the U.S. Presidential Scholars.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars program recognizes up to 161 students around the country each year for outstanding achievements in academics, the arts and career and technical education. Recently, class of 2026 graduates Christopher Kenneth Gebhardt from Clayton Ridge High School, Jackson Wallace Andrew Lampe from Wahlert Catholic High School and Vienna B. Rossmanith from Ames High School were selected as Iowa’s 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars. As a U.S. Presidential Scholar, each student was awarded the prestigious Presidential Scholars medallion.

Nomination forms and additional information can be found on the Department’s U.S. Presidential Scholars webpage.
