KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. – The 81st Training Group military training leader schoolhouse reopened in Matero Hall on Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, Nov. 2, 2026, following 18 months of renovations.

“Today marks an important milestone in the continued evolution of military training leader development,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Rex Thompson, 81st Training Support Squadron military training leader school commandant. “Our mission is to develop and prepare our MTLs, who shape the technical training expertise of all Airmen and Guardians.”

The newly renovated facility is fully operational, with more than a dozen students already attending classes. MTLs are responsible for training 92.1% of Airmen in the Air Force, and 100% of MTLs are trained here, at Keesler. Annually, Keesler trains over 450 MTLs to be tasked to 45 different training locations across the continental U.S.

“We have everything we need, and even room for growth,” said Thompson. “We’re very happy to be here.”

Previously located at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, the MTL schoolhouse temporarily operated out of Allee Hall at Keesler during the renovations before moving into its new home in Matero Hall.

With the new space acquired, the MTL schoolhouse is looking ahead to streamline training processes and strengthen the development of military training leaders who prepare Airmen and Guardians for success throughout technical training.
